FIDM adds a twist to the hallowed Graduation Announcement

Graduation Announcements can be very conservative or staid and lack sometimes, can we say, some creativity?  But the designer working with FIDM, a Downtown Los Angeles Fashion College, didn’t let tradition get in the way of bringing complexity, nuance, and fun to her design. For the recipient, this was the perfect introduction to the actual graduation ceremony which is a highly spirited event where huge numbers of the graduates decorate and bedazzle their mortar boards and even their graduation robes.

There were multiple parts to this project which included the: Announcement Envelope, Announcement Folder, Graduation Announcement, and Graduate Name Card. The designer, Tiffany Powell, utilized two mesmerizing and repetative patterns; one that highlighted fluidity and emotion, while the other honed in on structure and measurement. These four aspects of Fashion and Design that the college teaches play an important role in the studies and the careers of these graduates. The synergy of the two patterns playing off of each other is remarkably elegant.

The 2014 Announcement was a warm lemon yellow but part of the plan was for the invitation to be reprinted the following year in a different color story.  Lime green was the color chosen for 2015.

The challenge for Clear Image Printing was to lay down large areas of flat color so that it would read as almost silkscreened. The gold foil stamp had to be clean, and placed perfectly across thousands of pieces. Each student received 12 polybagged sets of announcements to invite friends and family.
